BASI (Paper/Pencil)
Nationally Standardized Achievement Test

The Basic Achievement Skills Inventory (BASI™) Comprehensive Test is a nationally standardized end-of-grade achievement test for students in grades 3–12. It measures Vocabulary, Spelling, Language Mechanics, Reading Comprehension, Math Computation, and Math Application. It does not test Science or Social Studies.

The BASI was nationally normed in 2002–2003 and aligns closely with other major achievement tests. It is available only in paper format and can be given individually or in small groups.

The BASI takes about two hours to complete, making it shorter than many other achievement tests. It meets state requirements for homeschoolers in North Carolina and many other states, making it a popular choice among homeschool educators.

What You Need to Know

The BASI Comprehensive Test is an excellent choice for homeschool educators who need a short, reliable, and easy-to-administer achievement test. With fast results, detailed reporting, and a simple testing process, it provides a stress-free way to meet some states’ requirements while gaining valuable insights into student learning.

One of the biggest advantages of the BASI is its easy administration. The BASI does not require a bachelor’s degree to administer, making it accessible to homeschool educators and other instructors.

Most BASI test levels cover two grade levels, except for Level 4, which includes all of high school. If a student needs score reports for two different grades within the same test level at the same time, they do not need to take the test twice, but they will be charged for two separate score reports. See the info box above for more details on grade levels and test levels.

However, if the student takes the same test level again the following year, they will likely see the same test questions. Their score report will also be different since it will be based on a higher test grade, despite the questions being the same. If you’re worried about the same test questions appearing again, please contact us.

After testing, you will receive a detailed score report that includes standard scores, national percentile rankings, grade equivalency, age equivalency, performance levels, and strengths and weaknesses.

All test materials must be returned within one week after the testing date, unless you have received special permission. Because these books are out of print and well worn, they must be handled with care. Damaged or lost materials will result in additional charges.
